2025 – het Rode Kruis opvangcentrum voor asielzoekers in Berlaar. Bewoners Nusrat Batool en Javed Hussain hebben grafische know-how en ervaring. En die zetten ze in om workshops te doen met kinderen in het centrum.

Met behulp van moodboards en verbeelding, zoeken ze voor elk kind wat zijn ‘totemdier’ is, en welke superheld hij of zij graag zou zijn. Na deze creatieve sessies maken ze voor elk kind een prachtige poster.

De reeks krijgt de naam ‘The Guardians of Earth’. En er wordt ook een achtergrondverhaal gemaakt. Over hoe het fout gaat met de Aarde – en dat gezien door de ogen van een witte walvis. Gelukkig zijn daar aan het einde … the Guardians of the Earth. En dus is er hoop!

Zo onstond de graphic novel ‘The Guardians of Earth’ met in deel één het achtergrondverhaal en in deel twee alle posters van de jongen superhelden.

Het album is voorlopig nog niet in de handel.

2025 – the Red Cross reception center for refugees in Berlaar. Residents Nusrat Batool and Javed Hussain have graphic design expertise and experience. They use these skills to run workshops with children at the center.

Using mood boards and imagination, they help each child find their ‘totem animal’ and decide which superhero they would like to be. After these creative sessions, they make a beautiful poster for each child.

The series is called ‘The Guardians of Earth’. A background story is also created about how things are going wrong with the Earth, as seen through the eyes of a white whale. Fortunately, at the end there are... the Guardians of the Earth. And so there is hope!

This is how the graphic novel ‘The Guardians of Earth’ came about, with the background story in part one and all the posters of the young superheroes in part two.

Nusrat Batool (°1997) is een grafische ontwerper met een achtergrond in humanitair werk. Eerder verwezenlijkte ze al de graphic novel ‘Kites of Hope’ en de documentaires ‘Semurgh’ en ‘Living Achieve’, in samenwerking met haar man Javed. Haar toegankelijke, personagegedreven verhalen komen voort uit een interesse in sociale rechtvaardigheid, veerkracht en gemeenschapsgevoel. Ondergerepresenteerde stemmen worden hierbij op de voorgrond geplaatst om sociale verandering teweeg te brengen.

Javed Hussain (°1988) is een ondernemende film- en documentairemaker. Zo produceerde hij o.a. de film ‘ALIF’ en ‘BALLOON’. Daarnaast richtte hij de openbare bibliotheek UMEED op in Quetta, Pakistan om zo toegang tot literatuur te faciliteren voor de lokale jeugd. Met zijn projecten streeft hij naar hoopvolle narratieven die mensen versterken en dialogen op gang trekken.

Nusrat Batool (born 1997) is a graphic designer with a background in humanitarian work. She previously created the graphic novel ‘Kites of Hope’ and the documentaries ‘Semurgh’ and ‘Living Achieve’, in collaboration with her husband Javed. Her accessible, character-driven stories stem from an interest in social justice, resilience, and community spirit. Underrepresented voices are brought to the fore in order to bring about social change.



Javed Hussain (born 1988) is an enterprising film and documentary maker. His productions include the films ‘ALIF’ and ‘BALLOON’. He also founded the UMEED public library in Quetta, Pakistan, to facilitate access to literature for local youth. Through his projects, he strives to create hopeful narratives that empower people and spark dialogue.
